History of St Mary Magdalene, Bildeston, Suffolk.
The Doomsday book records the presence of a church at Bildeston in 1086, however no details of this, probably, wooden church remain. At some point in the 12th century a stone church was built to replace the wooden one, but again, very little evidence remains except that of a document from the reign of King Richard I and that some stone from this church was used in the building of the tower.
The present church, as were so many, was built and expanded over a couple of centuries. In phase 1, dates from the turn of the 14th century, when the chancel, nave and tower were built. It is interesting to note that there was a miscalculation with the stairs to the rood loft, they should have been built within the wall, however, they protrude through to the outside, and so the wall had to be thickened at this point. In the 15th century phase 2 added the beautiful nave arcades, both the north and south aisles and the stunning south porch. The 10 misericords, which have largely been defaced, undoubtedly date from this period. Phase three may have been commenced at the same time as phase 2, or slightly later in the 15th century which included raising the roof of the chancel and nave by the addition of a clerestory and an additional window in the east wall. The church also included 2 chapels, one dedicated to St Thomas of Canterbury and the other to St Catherine.
The 19th century brought a much needed restoration, however, it also brought a serious downside - the stripping out of much of the church’s beautiful interior.
In 1975, the tower was undergoing major restoration work, which included the removal of the bells. Ascension day the locals were rudely awoken by the crash of the tower collapsing - a noise not much heard in the 20th century, due to the work of the Victorians. Many items were irreparably damaged by the falling masonry and scaffolding. Repairs to the church forced its closure St Mary’s for about a year.
In 1977 the nearby parish church of St Nicholas, Wattisham was declared redundant and the parish was merged with Bildeston. In memory of this the south chapel, which had been dedicated to St Catherine, was rededicated to St Nicholas and furnished with objects from the church St Nicholas.
As of November 2009 St Mary Magdalene does not appear to have a website.
